Graduate student awards

The Department of Mathematics has several award programs for current graduate students.

The Chat Yin Ho Scholarship

The Chat Yin Ho Scholarship is named in memory of Professor Chat Ho, who served on the UF Mathematics faculty from 1985 until his passing in 2005. It is intended for students who did not receive a fellowship or Grinter Award upon entering the program but have since made very good progress. It often goes to a third-year student, although second- and fourth-year students may also be considered. If there are several excellent candidates, preference may be given to a student working in one of Professor Ho’s areas of interest, including algebra and related fields.

The Eleanor Ewing Ehrlich Award

This award was established by the late Professor Paul Ehrlich in honor of his mother, Eleanor Ewing Ehrlich, a mathematician who worked at Los Alamos and helped run the IBM calculating team. The award recognizes female students who excel in the department’s graduate program.

The Joseph A. Alfred Award

The Joseph A. Alfred Award is funded by a generous gift from Joseph Alfred, an alumnus of the department’s master’s program. It is presented each year to the two first-year graduate students with the highest performance on the written qualifying examinations.

Graduate Student Excellence Award

The department presents two Graduate Student Excellence Awards each spring to recognize mathematics graduate students who have demonstrated excellence in research, as evidenced by publications, invited talks, or other substantial contributions to mathematical research. Any student currently enrolled in the Mathematics PhD program is eligible. Any member of the department’s graduate faculty may nominate a student.
