Department of Mathematics policies for affiliate and courtesy appointments and graduate faculty status

Affiliate and courtesy faculty

Affiliate faculty are individuals from another department at UF, and courtesy faculty are individuals from outside UF. They participate in departmental activities on at least an occasional basis, and their contribution is substantive and sustained in achieving the mission of the department. Individuals with these appointments shall not have voting privileges in the Department of Mathematics. The continuing status of these appointments shall be reviewed annually by the department chair in consultation with the Steering Committee.

Candidates seeking affiliate or courtesy faculty status with the Department of Mathematics must submit an application to the department chair that includes:

• Curriculum vitae (CV): Details academic and professional qualifications.
• Statement of purpose: A written statement outlining the purpose of the affiliation, the anticipated role with the department, and how the nominee’s credentials align with this role.
• Colloquium: The candidate is required to give a colloquium talk, which allows the department to evaluate the candidate’s academic contributions and expertise. This requirement may instead be replaced by evidence of an established active presence in the department.

Affiliate and courtesy faculty appointment requests will be discussed during a faculty meeting, followed by electronic voting.

• Voting eligibility: Faculty members who are at least 50% budgeted in the Department of Mathematics are eligible to vote.
• Approval requirement: Approval of an affiliate or courtesy appointment requires a majority affirmative vote of eligible participating faculty.

Graduate faculty status

In rare cases, University of Florida faculty members holding an affiliate or courtesy appointment in mathematics may be appointed to graduate faculty status in mathematics, subject to the rules of the Graduate School, including a two-thirds majority vote of mathematics department faculty holding graduate faculty status in mathematics, and under the terms and conditions that follow.

• Graduate faculty status is granted as the need arises to chair or co-chair a mathematics PhD committee or serve as an internal member, with the understanding that it will expire once the PhD is complete.
• At least one-half of the members of a mathematics PhD committee, including the chair or co-chair, must be mathematics department faculty holding graduate faculty status in mathematics.¹

Individuals from other units with a graduate faculty appointment in mathematics shall not have voting privileges in the Department of Mathematics. The continuing status of these appointments shall be reviewed annually by the department chair in consultation with the Steering Committee.

Requests for graduate faculty status will be discussed during a faculty meeting, followed by electronic voting.

• Voting eligibility: Faculty members appointed in mathematics who hold graduate faculty status in mathematics are eligible to vote.
• Approval requirement: Satisfaction of the rules and regulations of the Graduate School, including a two-thirds majority vote of the eligible mathematics faculty, is required.
