The University Math Society (UMS) continues to play a central role in fostering an active and welcoming undergraduate mathematics community at UF. Open to all students with an interest in mathematics, UMS organizes a wide variety of academic, career-focused and social activities throughout the year — no formal membership required.
Signature events include the Annual Integration Bee, where students test their integral-solving prowess in a spirited head-to-head competition, and UF’s in-person site for MMATHS, a prestigious high school math competition organized in collaboration with Yale University. These events not only build problem-solving skills but also strengthen connections between UF and the broader mathematical community.
In addition to competitions, UMS hosts regular general body meetings to keep students informed about departmental events and opportunities, as well as faculty and student-led math talks that explore topics beyond the standard curriculum. These talks provide undergraduates with valuable exposure to advanced mathematical ideas while offering an informal venue to connect with faculty and peers.
UMS also organizes technical workshops, helping students build practical skills in Python, R, LaTeX and other tools essential for both academic research and industry careers. Regular social events ensure that UF’s undergraduate math community remains engaged and supportive, offering spaces for collaboration, mentorship and friendship.
The UMS is advised by Professor Sergei Shabanov. For more information about UMS and its events, visit their website, which includes links to their Discord and Instagram.
