Eric Evert
Eric Evert joined the Department of Mathematics as an assistant professor in Fall 2024. Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Northwestern University, working with Professor Aravindan Vijayaraghavan. He also held a postdoctoral position at KU Leuven in the group of Professor Lieven De Lathauwer. Eric earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 2018 from the University of California San Diego under the direction of Professor J. William Helton.
His research focuses on matrix convex sets, a generalization of classical convex sets with applications in quantum information theory and control theory. He is also interested in algebraic techniques for tensor decomposition, with an emphasis on signal processing applications.
Eric’s hobbies include cooking and playing the bass guitar.

Jesse Kim
Jesse Kim joined the department as a visiting assistant professor in Fall 2024. He received his Ph.D. from UC San Diego under the supervision of Professor Brendon Rhoades. His research is in algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, with a focus on webs and diagrammatic categorification, bringing visual insight to algebraic questions. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, origami and spending time in nature.
New Staff Member
This past year, the department also welcomed a new staff member:
Kari Lane
Kari Lane was hired as Academic Assistant II.
She joins our existing staff, Margaret Somers (Administrative Specialist III) and Kristen Pursley (Administrative Specialist I), bringing the total to three.
