Faculty and Staff Retirement
Professor Phil Boyland
In 2024, three longtime members of the department retired: Phil Boyland (27 years), Jonathan King (34 years), and Sandy Gagnon, our staff member who served the department for 35 years! Professors Boyland and King contributed immensely to our teaching mission, research excellence and departmental life. Ms. Gagnon’s dedication, professionalism and institutional knowledge supported generations of faculty and students. We are deeply grateful for their decades of service and wish each of them the very best in the next chapter of their lives.
Mike Jury Awarded UFRF Professorship
Professor Mike Jury has been awarded a University of Florida Research Foundation (UFRF) Professorship for the 2025-2028 term. This prestigious award recognizes faculty who have established a distinguished record of research and scholarship and are expected to continue making significant contributions to their field. We are proud to celebrate Dr. Jury’s outstanding achievements and his contributions to the department and the university’s research mission.
Peter Bubenik Gave Invited Address at AMS Meeting
Professor Peter Bubenik was invited to give an invited address at the 2025 Spring Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). The meeting took place on March 8-9, 2025, at Clemson University in Clemson, SC. Professor Bubenik’s talk, titled “Topological Data Analysis: from geometry, algebra and combinatorics to analysis, learning and applications,” explored mathematical foundations and real-world uses of topological data analysis.
Chamila Gamage Received College Teaching Award
Assistant Instructional Professor Chamila Gamage received the 2024-25 College Teaching Award. This award recognizes her outstanding teaching contributions to the department and the college. Many fine CLAS teachers were nominated for these awards, so Chamila’s success in this competition is a testament to her true excellence.
John Streese Received the Marvel D. Townsend Lecturer Award
The recipient of the 2024-25 Marvel D. Townsend Lecturer Award is Dr. John Streese. This honor, named after longtime UF mathematics faculty member Marvel D. Townsend, recognizes excellence in teaching and dedication to undergraduate education. Professor Townsend, who served the department for over two decades, left a lasting legacy through her passionate commitment to students and classroom teaching. The award bearing her name continues to celebrate these values. We congratulate John for embodying this spirit through his outstanding instruction, mentorship and contributions to the undergraduate mathematics program.
