Merit Pay

PRECIS OF MERIT PAY CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
Merit Pay Procedures: The chair of the Department of Mathematics will use the Merit Pay Criteria to determine the allocation of merit salary monies. Each faculty member provides input in the annual activities report. The steering committee serves as a consulting body to the chair and comments on the proposed allocation before the chair send it to the dean. After receiving the comments of the steering committee, the department chair alone makes the final decision for merit pay allocation.
Merit Pay Criteria: Merit pay will be appointed to those members of the department who fulfill their duties in research, teaching and service commendably and who excel in at least one of these categories.
The following are examples of criteria:
Research
Internal factors – active participation in research seminars and department colloquia

  •  direction of dissertations
  •  development of advanced graduate curriculum
  •  external factors – research papers accepted for publication
  •  receipt of grants and contracts
  •  talks at professional meetings
  •  colloquia and visits to other research institutions
  •  awards, fellowships and prizes
  •  consulting and other scholarly activities

Teaching
internal factors – teaching awards

  •  good teacher evaluation scores
  •  participation in seminars
  •  organization of workshops for teaching assistants
  •  supervision of graduate students
  •  conducting reading courses
  •  development of curriculum
  •  activities which promote the undergraduate and graduate programs in mathematics

external factors – organization of workshops for high school teachers

  •  published papers on the teaching of mathematics
  •  publications of interest to graduate, undergraduate or high school students

Service
internal factors – participating in and chairing departmental, college and university committees and councils

  •  advising students
  •  administering multi-sectional courses
  •  evaluating persons or programs with the university
  •  recruiting undergraduate and graduate students
  •  attracting high caliber faculty members

external factors – serving as editor of a professional journal

  • holding office in professional organizations
  • -refereeing papers and grant proposals
  • service to public schools
