Text
“How To Prove It: A Structured Approach” (Second Edition) – D. J. Velleman
Course description
We shall cover selected topics from the adopted text: material from the first four chapters will be discussed in the order in which it appears in the text; material from chapters five, six and seven will then be chosen according to remaining time and prevailing taste. The development of critical skills and proof techniques is an especially important aim of the course.
Homework problems (see the list below) will be assigned and discussed but will not contribute towards the grade, which will be decided by test performance according to the following scale: A 90%, B 80%, C 70%, D 60%, with 3% increments above/below for plus/minus grades. There will be four in-class tests, on the dates listed below; all four tests will be weighted equally.
The making up of any missed test will be allowed for the usual reasons (such as illness or accident) supported by documentary evidence.
